Lovorka Magaš Bilandžić

Lovorka Magaš Bilandžić was born in Zagreb in 1981. She graduated in Art History and Comparative Literature from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb in 2005. She received her PhD degree in Art History from the same University in 2012 with the thesis entitled The Life and Oeuvre of Sergije Glumac. Since 2006 she has worked at the Department of Art History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb where she teaches courses on modern and contemporary art. She is a member of a Chair of Modern Art and Visual Communication and in 2021 she was elected associate professor. From 2018 to 2022 she has held the position of the director of Postgradaute programme in Art History and coordinated the creation of the new Doctoral study programme in Art History, Cultural Heritage and Visual Culture.
She participated in a number of national and international scientific projects: projects funded by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia Croatian Art of the 19th and 20th Centuries in European Context (2006) and Croatian Art from Classicism to Postmodernism (2007−2013), as well as bilateral projects Croatian and Serbian Artistic Connections in the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries (2011−2012) and German−Croatian Artist’s Relations as a Part of International Artistic Networks in the 20th Century (2014−2015), project funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia Parisian Art Scene and Croatian Modern Art (2013−2015), international scientific and exhibition project funded by the European Union Bauhaus − Networking Ideas and Practice (2013−2015) and several project within the Financial Support of the University of Zagreb. She participated in scientific projects funded by the Croatian Science Foundation Croatia and Central Europe: Art and Politics in the Late Modern Period (1780−1945) (2014−2017) and Art and State in Croatia from the Enlightenment to the Present (2018−2023).
She is the author of numerous retrospective and group exhibitions: Sergije Glumac (Milan and Ivo Steiner Gallery, Zagreb, 2005), Expressionism in Croatian Caricature (Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2011), Expressionism in Croatian Print and Contemporary Croatian Graphic Art Scene / Questioning the Medium (both as a part of the 6th Days of Graphic Art in the Gallery of Fine Arts in Osijek, 2013), Silvio Vujičić: Behind the Scene (Vladimir Bužančić Gallery, Zagreb, 2014), Foto Tonka − Secrets of a Social Chronicler’s Photographic Studio (Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2015), Foto Tonka and Theatre (part of the 26th Days of Miroslav Krleža, Croatian National Theatre, Osijek, 2015), In the Rhythm of Time − Pavao Vamplin’s Graphic Design (Centre for Culture Čakovec, 2020), Sergije Glumac – Retrospective (Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2021), New Standard – Studio for Industrial Design and Modern Living in the 1950s (HDD Gallery, Zagreb, 2021, with P. Počanić), Tomislav Krizman – Book and Magazine Design (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, 2022) and Boris Dogan – Painter in Graphic Design (HDD Gallery, Zagreb, 2023). She is an author of the sections on the exhibitions Expressionism in Croatian Art (section graphic art, Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2011), Journey to Eternity (section photography, Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2016), The Sixties in Croatia – Myth and Reality (section graphic design, Museum of Arts and Crafts, Zagreb, 2018), On the Brink: The Visual Arts in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia 1929–1941 (section photography, Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2019) and Ratko Petrić. Retrospective: Make Them Face the Truth! (section graphic design, Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb, 2021). She participated in the organisation of the exhibitions Postsculpture (Croatian Association of Artists, Zagreb, 2005), Avant-garde Tendencies in Croatian Art (Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2007) and Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem – Sources of European Civilisation (Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2009).
She has presented papers in numerous national and international scientific conferences, has held more than 25 public lectures and has participated in an organization of several national and international scientific conferences (e.g. Art and the State in Modern Central Europe (18th – 21st Century), Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, 2021). She is an author of the books Foto Tonka − Secrets of a Social Chronicler’s Photographic Studio (2015), Sergije Glumac: Print, Graphic design, Stage design (2019) and Sergije Glumac – Retrospective (2021), regularly publishes both scientific papers and reviews. She is a member of DPUH (Croatian Society of Art Historians), AICA and ULUPUH (Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts).
She has received several awards: the 2015 Annual Award of Young Researchers and Artists, awarded by the Association of University Teachers and Other Researchers in Zagreb, the 2015 Annual Award of the Croatian Society of Art Historians for the promotion of art history (for the exhibition and book Foto Tonka − Secrets of a Social Chronicler’s Photographic Studio), and the 2019 Annual Award of the Croatian Society of Art Historians for the promotion of art history (for the book Sergije Glumac: Print, Graphic design, Stage design). As a co-author of the monograph On the Brink: The Visual Arts in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia 1929–1941 she received the Izidor Cankar Award of the Slovenian Art History Society in 2021.
Her fields of professional interest include modern and contemporary art, particularly graphic design, photography, stage design, graphic arts and history of exhibitions.
